Edonkey requires a connection to port 4662 or 4661 (I forget which one, it
uses both (for different things)) from the server to work in open mode.
When you connect to a server it attempts to connect back to you on that port
to see if it can contact you or if you are firewalled. If it does not get a
response back in a suitable timeframe it will give up and assume that you
are firewalled,(and give a low ID number out to you).
Are you connecting to different servers? Some are blocked themselves and
can only see clients as being firewalled.
It's also possible your ISP blocks or rate-limits traffic on those ports in
an effort to save money.
The ID number will not change just by turning off your firewall - you have
to reconnect to a server to be assigned a different ID.
If you have a look on the FAQ pages for Edonkey 2000, you will find the
exact ports you need to have open.
