The xp firewall only alerts/blocks incoming traffic , to your computer not
outgoing so anything malicious e.g trojan ,spyware etc ,will be able to
connect out ; therefore I would disable XPs firewall and put a "proper" one
on :).As for an anti trojan programme some people prefer a seperate anti
trojan whereas others might argue that Kaspersky anti virus has as good
detection rates for trojans as a dedicated trojan scanner.AVG (which I also
use) is not the best at detecting trojans. So if you are gonna stick with AVG
get a trojan scanner too , or pay for an anti virus programme like kaspersky
which has excellent trojan detection too.Probably the best trojan scanner is
TDS3 from here...
http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/
A cheap and effective way to detect trojans etc is to install regprot (free)
from here (though it wont clean them once you are infected)
http://www.diamondcs.com.au/web/htm/regprot.htm
quote
"RegistryProt is a 100% free, standalone, compact, low-level realtime
registry monitor and protector, that adds another dimension to Windows
security and intrusion detection. By monitoring important locations and keys
in the Windows system registry, RegistryProt will alert whenever a key is
added or changed, and then give the option of accepting the key change,
reverting back to the original key setting, or deleting the key.

RegistryProt's most useful attribute is that it will detect the vast
majority of trojans at the exact moment that they infect/install themselves
into your system, and as such provides a new dimension in trojan and
intrusion detection"
