I believe different implementations of IPsec are different, but I can say
that we successfully use Nortel client software to connect to a Nortel
Contivity switch using IPsec VPN from behind a linksys BEFSR41. You might
try downloading the latest firmware for the router from linksys, try setting
up port forwarding to direct all incoming VPN to the VPN client [if it
worked, this would limit the network so that only that one client could use
VPN... this is the way the cheaper netgear routers deal with ipsec, which is
to say not very well]. Also try searching google and google groups or
contacting Linksys to find out about compatibility.
If you're using the VPN client that comes with Windows, my understanding is
that IPsec might be used for part of the authentication, but it's really a
PPTP or L2TP connection, in which case IPsec passthrough would not help you.
There are also some issues that might make it so that you can VPN
successfully, but you might not automatically connect to the windows domain
like you would if you were in the building.
