It is very likely that your ADSL router at least supports NAT,
which does provide a basic level of protection against outside attack.
There are various opinions about if NAT is indeed satisfactory,
but there are scenarios where even the most sophisticated firewalls
can't protect you either (e.g. a virus carried in a Web page or an e-mail
attachment).

Your case is a very typical hard disk mechanical break down,
it happened to me too several months ago, unfortunately.
