I do agree with Neo as to his opinion on routers. They are easy to configure
and protect you from a lot of security issues even if you erroneously
configure your software firewall. You can if you want add one depending on
whether your adsl modem is ethernet, usb or comport based. Aside from that
ICS is a problem for some but it sounds like you have it working without the
firewall and it does have its benefits. If you use filesharing between
computers and they are independently connected to the internet via a router
you have to leave netbios enabled and this not good. With ICS you can
disable netbios from the internet side and still safely fileshare between
your two PC's. So don't necessarily dump ICS particularly if you have it
working.Try to find a firewall that you can get to work with it. Sometimes
certain versions of these firewalls just won't do it, but a lot will, they
are just difficult at times to configure properly. As far as ZoneAlarm,
there is a step by step guide on their website on how you can configure it
for ICS. It may or may not work depending on your system. Be very specific
in your settings as to the different IP addresses. You have one for the your
ethernet adapter and one for ICS. Mixing these up in your settings is one
reason that may cause the behavior you describe. I would double check all
the settings that contain your internal IP addresses(Ethernet and ICS)first.
If that doesn't fix it check all your setting concerning
filesharing(netbios). Your solution is most likely in one of those two
areas.
If you just can't get it to work you might want to try another firewall that
has a trial version and has documentation explaining how to set it up
specifically with ICS. Someone else might have "perfected" their
configuration wizard for ICS.
