I'll just give my opinion on the situation now instead of waiting for
feedback (since I kill-file anything more than a day old).
You need to go to about.com, microsoft.com, or somewhere that tells you how
to configure all the computers' network settings, which is usually the case.
I'm not ruling out the router, especially in a dorm situation (lol), but
still it's worth a shot.
Put all NIC settings that have an automatic setting on automatic.
For Win9x, right click network neighborhood (or control panel > network
properties) and have only the NIC, microsoft client, filesharing for
microsoft, and tcp/ip installed.
Then go configure tcp/ip for "Get IP automatically" (DHCP), use DHCP for
WINS, etc. Make sure your gateway is 192.168.1.1 for linksys routers.
Make sure ALL computers have the same workgroup specified and that it is
upper case.
I hate WinME, and I don't know how to configure it, so I'll skip it.
In Windows 2000, go into network properties for the connection you're using,
make sure only tcp/ip, microsoft client and filesharing for microsoft are
installed, along with the NIC. Go into TCP/IP config, make sure you do NOT
specify an IP, go add 192.168.1.1 as your default gateway, disable LMHosts,
use DHCP settings for netbios over tcp/ip config, make sure you're NOT using
an IPSec policy (for peer to peer), and that tcp/ip filtering is NOT enabled
(or if you insist on it, that everything is allowed).
Restart ALL computers and see if this helps.
Also, if you got more than one win2k computer, be sure all of them in local
security policy (control panel \ administrative tools \ local security
policy) under local policies \ security options that Lan Manager
Authentication level is set to "Send NTLM responses only". This allows you
to actually share files and folders, which I would suggest is a must. At
least share some folder on your hard drive, to make sure that something's
being shared, therefore your computer should be visible.
Then, under admin tools, go to services, and pick one computer that the
Computer Browser service is set to automatic, the rest to manual.
Also, in the essence of security, your internet zones should all be 2nd
highest level except restricted zone, which is the highest.
This is my opinion, and what seems to work under my Linksys Broadband Router
(4 port), should be same for yours.
