ZA stalls my machine

I am running the latest version of ZA Pro with XP Home Edition SP1. I have a
recurring problem with ZA which goes like this.

I install a program that needs to contact the internet. The first time it
attempts to do so, my machine hangs. Pressing control\alt\delete repeatedly
eventually brings up a ZA window asking if I wish to give the program
access, but the computer is in a state where I am not able to click on this
window (or anything else for that matter). The only option is to log out of
my user account and reboot the computer.

On rebooting, the program in question is now listed in ZA. I make sure the
options are checked to allow the program to contact the internet. But my
machine still hangs when I activate the program and it attempts to do so.
More control\alt\deletes eventually bring up another unclickable ZA window
asking me to allow the program to contact the internet (which I have done
already). At this point I have to give up and either make do without the
program or run it with ZA disabled.

ZA does not behave this way when installing any kind of program but it does
so with a sufficient number to be seriously troublesome. It does it with
some (but not all) programs that require server rights, but also with some
programs (but not all) which need to connect to the net from time to time to
check whether an update is available.

I would be grateful for any insights.
