For a typical home PC, you can disable these for added safety and
performance:
UPnP
Remote Registry
Webclient
Remote Desk Help Session Manager
Terminal services
Wireless Zero Configuration
SSDP Discovery Service
Smart Card
Smart Card Helper
QoS RSVP
Network Location Awareness
Error Reporting Service
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
Automatic Updates (use windowsupdate manually)
Alerter
Windows Time (if you don't care about your time being updated
automatically)
In addition, if you don't share printers or drives, you can disable
all the netbios stuff in tcp/ip settings. If you do this then also
turn off the tcp/ip Netbios Helper service and the Server service.
The last thing you can do is set most of the other services to
"manual" so they don't load unless they're needed. If anything breaks,
just set it back to "automatic".
