"Taliban1818," that's an unfortunate email address you chose, considering
the human rights problems, terrorist activities, torturing and killing
associated with that group.
I think a large number of the solutions out there all use the same CyberNot
list subscription. CyberPatrol makes several different types of software
that offer I think the most flexibility, in that they allow you to block
total number of internet hours in a day, total number of internet hours in a
week, and block certain hours on certain days, like no surfing at lunch or
at midnight. They also allow you to block not just web surfing, but it can
also inspect chat sessions for objectionable words and personal information
like students giving out phone numbers, and you can add other
internet-accessing programs like internet-based games and obscure chat
clients. All these are features that are I think hard to find in other
programs, and are features that you would want in order to be able to block
absolutely all internet access.
Cyberpatrol comes in at least three flavors: software that is installed
locally on the workstation that is easily hacked, software that is run on
the workstation but is installed on a central file server [which may or may
not be more secure that the first version], and SuperScout Server which is a
server that sits on your network and, if it is fast enough, tries to block
the files or web pages when they come back into the network. Note that this
is not a proxy server, as the traffic does not pass through it. I would
imagine that if the server locked up or stopped responding, it would not
block traffic.
Then there are other products like Netgear routers and Netscreen firewalls
that include cyber-not list content filtering. These products are possibly
harder to hack than the CyberPatrol / SuperScout, but you don't get a lot of
the features of CyberPatrol, so there are some things these products
probably can't block.
The best solution is probably to use both products together, to get the best
features of both. But this would cost more.
No matter what product you buy, there are always going to be legitimate
sites that are accidentally blocked, and undesirable sites that are not
blocked.
