With IE 6 I had the similar problem, in conjunction with zone alarm.
When I allowed in Zone Alarm the internet access for
the Generic host process for Win32 Services,
IE 6 worked well again and all problems were settled.
BTW I use Windows XP Pro und have the XP fire wall switched on too.
But this firewall doesn't stop outgoing traffic, so I think, an
additional firewall like ZA is neccessary. But I found out, that with
the XP firewall active, my ZA firewall has less to do than before.
