I've been unsuccessfully trying to get AGE OF EMPIRES II (AGE OF KINGS) -
THE CONQUERORS EXPANSION to work on http://zone.msn.com/conquerors/ behind
the free version of the ZoneAlarm V2.6.362 firewall (which I like and trust)
for some time, without having to reduce the security settings from High to
Medium for either the Local or Internet zones. In the end, I gave up, and am
now trying out ZA Pro V3.0.118. It seems to work ok, even on High security
for both the Trusted and Internet zones, but I don't understand why, since
ZA Pro seems to be doing exactly the same as the free ZA. The detail is
below, but quite simply, why doesn't the free ZA work? I'm hoping that
someone here can explain it to me.
Also, once you enter a room, ZA Pro starts indicating that it is blocking
UDP packets to my port 28800. It seems that the more players there are in a
room, the more of these packets ZA Pro blocks - sometimes a LOT! Why are
these packets being sent, are they important, and if so, how can I then
continue to play with no apparent problems if so many of them are being
blocked?
TIA
Steve.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
DETAILS :
My system : stand-alone Win98 pc, DirectX 8.1, cable modem connection,
AoK-TC 1.0c patch applied.
The five relevant programs that request, and I've allowed to have, access
through both the free ZA and ZA Pro (same for both versions) are listed
below. (I have also included the ports and protocols I've allowed, or
restricted, them to access in ZA Pro - presumably the free ZA allows all
ports and protocols to be acccessed.)
Age of Empires II Expansion (*)
[ZA Pro - ONLY : TCP and UDP port 47624; TCP and UDP ports 2300-2400; UDP
port 2234]
Microsoft DirectPlay Server (*)
[ZA Pro - ONLY : TCP port 47624; TCP and UDP ports 2300-2400; UDP port 2234]
ZCLIENT.EXE (#)
[ZA Pro - All ports and protocols]
ZONE.EXE (#)
[ZA Pro - All ports and protocols]
ZSETUP.EXE (#)
[ZA Pro - All ports and protocols]
(*) = needs ZA Server Permission as well as Access Permission to the
internet
(#) = needs just ZA Access Permission to the internet
I've carried out some testing, although not extensively, since each test
involves getting into a game situation with others, and suspecting a
problem, I didn't want to waste other people's time. The above set-up seems
to work, although allowing the first two programs to have access to all
ports and protocols presumably would work as well (I wanted to only allow
what was necessary).
For info, the following two Microsoft Knowledge Base articles have been of
use in the above :
