Zone Alarm is doing you a BIG favor not letting the biggest worm
target on the internet contact the source of its worms....
Just go read:
http://online.securityfocus.com/archive/1/264590
and you can see why you need to change email and newsgroup clients to
something NOT so vulnerable or targeted by every wannabe cracker on
the net. Scary Stuff!
I'm recommending some freeware from www.tucows.com's shareware storage
site. Pegasus 4 for email is fantastic, totally freeware without
spys/spams and other crap. I can't believe he gives it away. Free
Agent does everything you need for text-based newsgroups like this
one. I'm typing on it now. It's also free and free of crapware. For
binary newsgroups downloading, I've taken a big liking to Xnews which
is freeware, too. Xnews decodes every brand of encoding, including
the new Yenc. In regular multipart binaries, not the odd
RAR/.001/etc., Xnews even checks to see that all the parts are there,
whole and, while it downloads the parts, if anything is missing, it
puts a big, red ? next to the error and either stops downloading that
particular file, which would be useless anyways, or if it's not
completed, puts an error message at the end of the filename so you can
easily see which files downloaded from Xnew's great working que are
not complete. If you simply want to strip newsgroups, without
selecting files, while you are away or asleep, I recommend the $20 SB
News bot which will relentlessly download everything there is in
multiple binary newsgroups by simply pointing it to the groups and
pressing CONNECT. It only uses one port on the news server
downloading in serial, group after group. Xnews uses as many ports as
you have opened newsgroups, in parallel, sucking up as many ports as
they'll let you have....(c; All 3 news programs work great and don't
crash.
Don't forget to UNINSTALL Outlook Express to take that big "KICK ME
HARD" sign off your back the crackers are laughing at. UNinstall
Windows Scripting Host (Visual Basic Scripting) so no worms can run,
either. You can live without it. Disable Javascript (not java) and
ActiveX in your browsers, too. Websites do vicious things, now.....
