Messenger opens these ports as needed. I have a feeling that when you try to
initiate a file transfer your MSN will say to the other one "I want to send
a file to you from my port XXXX, I am IP address W.X.Y.Z". The other will
say try to open the connection back to your machine at W.X.Y.Z, which if you
have a NAT firewall will not be the correct address, and the file transfer
connection will fail. It's similar to the way active FTP works - the server
opens the connection back to the client, and a NAT firewall will often mess
this up if it doesn't amend the packet data as the client is sending the
wrong IP address to the server. That could be why the second article
mentions that NAT firewalls may cause problems - maybe with a UPnP NAT
firewall it can ask it what the machine's public IP address is and send the
correct data in the file transfer request. Have you tried running Snort or
TCPDump to see if you can log the actual data in the packets and determine
if your hidden IP address is being sent out by MSN on a file transfer
request?
