I've got to question this. You say you had "no hackers in your
computer" until you installed Norton Firewall. If you had no firewall
before installing Norton, how did you know whether or not anyone had
exploited their way into your machine? It sounds to me like what you
really meant was you had no evidence of attempted exploits until you
installed a software firewall which alerted you to those attempts. I
have not used Norton Firewall but I presume it's better than nothing
at all.

This is true to an extent. Many firewalls don't prevent outbound
connections, only inbound connections; and if you don't practice safe
computing, you're bound to wind up with some trojan or another which
connects outward instead of establishing a listening port. IRC-based
trojans are probably the best example. They don't listen for
connections, they connect outbound and such connections will slip
through improperly configured firewalls.
Be careful what you download, and if you use IE, make sure your copy
is properly patched up. The same goes for Windows. Assuming your
operating system does not have any known vulnerabilities, the only way
malware can be introduced to your machine is if you download it.
