Well, your users may be using an open socks proxy
server to do it, and not necessarily on port 1080. There
are a small, but growing, number of open socks proxies
on ports other than 23 or 1080. This is mostly being
done to avoid problems with the "socks detectors"
installed on nearly every IRC server out there. But
setting the listening port to something other than 23
or 1080, this solves the problems.
Also, people who have socks servers dont want them
showing up on the most common lists. If you put a socks
server on ports other than 23 or 1080, most sites that
scan for socks servers will NOT find you, as they are
scanning ports 23 or 1080. On my home network, I
keep the socks facilities on a port other than 23 or 1080,
so it will NOT be found.
