More likely your system changing resolutions and/or color depths
(usually in games), and the desktop color scheme is not rebounding properly.
I find that occasionally when I exit out of an older game, my taskbar icons
will be in a lower color depth (8bit instead of 16bit), and look messed up.
This carried over to certain program popups as well (although I have never
experienced this with ZA popups ... but did with the ZA tray icon. One way
to fix it is to get the icon to change ... either reloading, or changing the
icon through some setting. This should fix the associated popups as well.
My theory is that some programs retain the lower color bit display even
after the rest of the display returns to 16 or 32 bit.

I don't think color display changes were the corruption your professor
was referring to. Certainly, though, the statement as relayed is a very
general and obvious statement. If one can corrupt the code of a firewall,
hence diminish its effectiveness, one could more easily break through it.
