About about one week after I got my new PC (Windows/XP Home Edition),
I decided to install a firewall as I was not very convinced about the
built-in firewall. First choice was ZA. After already a few days I had
problems to dial into my ISP (the modem made connection with the ISP
but the user id/password verification failed). Restarting the PC
resolved the problems. Searching in this NG, I found many (similar)
problems with ZA. After I de-installed it (using the recommendations
of the ZA website as the uninstall of ZA leaves a lot of
programs/files/registry entries behind!!!)...all problems were gone.
I've tried both the Free and the Pro version and both gave problems. I
installed Outpost and never had problems again with dialing into my
ISP. So, if you keep having problems with ZA, consider another free
firewall (advantage of Outpost is that it can block ads and webpages
that contain certain words/characters and it also renames suspected
mail attachments). However, there is a small problem with Outpost that
will be resolved soon: you can switch to another user but if Outpost
is prompting for an answer, it is expecting the answer by the (toggled
away) user. As I'm the only one using the PC, it is not a problem for
me.
Good luck!
