If you go to www.microsoft.com and search for svchost.exe you will find links to
various technical docs describing this thing. It is part of windows xp and seems
to be mainly involved in processing graphics. It's present in Windows ME as well
but by another name. Read about it and draw your own conclusions as to whether you
want to let it do. I've found that many web pages don't show if you limit it's
access too severely. I've forbidden it from server privileges on the internet but
let it do everything else including server/local.
I think alg.exe is the windows XP built-in firewall. Experimenting with turning
the XP firewall off and on drew zone alarms attention to this thing immediately.
