Mackie,

It's a little hard to say, but I think this has been noted before ...

| I have NIS 2002 Ver 4.0.2.96 on W98SE on a single PC
| I disabled it and now all fields are grayed out.

First, did you Disable NIS or Log Off? I see both options when I
right-click on NIS in the System Tray.

| When I click on Wizard or Options it says"You must be a Supervisor to
run
| Wizard"

You see, that's why I ask. It appears as if you may simply have Logged
Off from the operative user account. There was a bit of an unintended
oversight in the early install routine for NIS 2002. At one point, during
install, you got asked if you wanted to install Parental Controls. I
think in the accompanying fine print, there was a statement that you would
need to enable parental control if you wanted to use the User Accounts.
(You can't really use Parental Controls, without having User Accounts, so
that part made sense. However, the converse is not technically true --
you CAN use User Accounts without enabling (or more to the point, using)
Parental Control. As a matter of fact, I do that on this NIS 3.0 FE setup
on this particular Win 98 SE box.

I think it might have been better originally if they had asked (in NIS
4.0), do you want to install the basic NIS product (without Parental
Control and user accounts) or do you wish to install the full product
(what was called NIS FE in 3.0 and earlier releases)?

If you did, in fact, say "No" when queried about installing Parental
Controls, then it is my understanding that, in all likelihood, you WILL
have to remove NIS (using Add/Remove Software ... in the Control Panel and
then re-install it.

However, there is a REMOTE POSSIBILITY that all you need to do is Log On
(from right-click menu on the NIS icon in the System Tray). Use
Administrator as the username and a blank password. Did that work?

Before going any further, however, I would suggest you go to
www.capimonitor.nl and download Albert Janssen's two freeware add-on
utilities: NIS Settings and NIS Rules Viewer. Unzip the apps and install
them; then use them to produce a hard-copy of your CURRENT settings in NIS
(both the basic NIS configuration settings and the existing firewall
ruleset that you now have). This may save you some time later on.

I would, however, suggest that you reinstall the entire product, this time
taking care to say "Yes" when it asks about Parental Control. Set up your
own Supervisor-level account with a name and password of your choice.
Switch to the NEW Supervisor-level account and make sure everything still
works to your satisfaction. You might want to add an Adult-level or
Child-level account while you're at it. Switch over to the Parental
Control Setting Pane and confirm that "Enable Parental Control" is
UNCHECKED (UNSELECTED).

If everything is working properly, make either the new Supervisor account
(that you added) the default account or set the Default Account to the
Adult or Child-level account. (To me, the default supervisor account is a
potential security hole in itself as the account name is certainly known
and it has no password by default.) Then DELETE the Default Supervisor
Account.

Run LiveUpdate (this may take three or four repeats) to download all the
updates to the product that were lost in the re-install. Then, using NIS
Settings and NIS Rules Viewer again, confirm that you've got both back to
the configuration and ruleset that you had previously installed. (NIS
Settings is going to require that you enter a particular User Account,
however, as the configuration is obviously different for a Supervisor and
a Child-level account, for example.

| And if I try to Uninstall it, a similar sign appears.

| Norton support guides indicate that if all else fails, manually
uninstall
| it. Question- Has anyone seen this problem?

Hope this helps.
