For my two cent's worth, skip the hardware. With only one computer,
which will be turned off at night, a software firewall should suffice.
Your greatest vulnerability is with services and shares. A single
computer should *not* need shares enabled at all; kill the shares and
better than half of your worries are cancelled. If you have Win Me, or
Win XP (maybe Win 98SE, I don't know) check for UPnP; disable it if
you have it. It is a service which listens on ports 1900 and 5000.
Disable through the Control Panel, Windows Setup, Communications,
Details. Uncheck Universal Plug and Play. Don't worry, it is for
peripherals attached by Ethernet connections. Then run ZA (Free or
Pro), Tiny, or some similar software to catch most common out bound
attempts.

NAT routers are designed for sharing a single IP among several
computers and are designed primarily for NAT service, not firewall
service. The distinction is probably not worth an argument since NAT
is good enough. It's just that the hardware is an extra expense, and
no extra protection over disabling shares and unnecessary services.
