I guess your partly right but you do not have to leave your address to
get spam.

I called a support number for an app for information. I was told for
example you post on a newsgroup. Your e-mail address is invalid that
you display. Spammers can determine your actual e-mail address by
tracing the IP address. Not sure if that is totally true. My IP is
not static so it changes. I am not sure how often it changes I
haven't tracked that. Where I work we have traced a few spam messages
using the IP etc. not the actual bogus address displayed.
