We broke a trust to a domain recently. New accounts were set up in the
new domain. On a couple of NT 4 and Windows 2000 workstations the user
profiles were copied from the old profiles created in the old domain
to the new ones. The trust to the old domain had already been removed.
Because of this, we could not use the properties box to copy one
profile to the other (all the old domain profiles were listed as
‘unknown account').
The new profiles were created on the PC with the new domain accounts.
Unfortunately, Explorer was used to just copy everything in the user's
profile branch over from the old to the new (including Ntuser.dat ).
Now unless the users is in the admin group, the profiles do not
operate correctly – printers cannot be set up, desktop changes are not
kept, Office (Word) gives the prompt for user name on initials, etc.
This is an unusual problem created by not moving the profiles
correctly I know, but I thought I'd try asking if anyone knew how to
correct this without having to delete and recreate all the profiles.
Thanks.
