I work in an IT department and our policy on "locking down" systems seems to
be pretty similar to your IT deaprtment.
People moan etc. but we do it for good reasons:
1. Ease of support: standard configurations make it a lot quicker to fix
problems
2. Security: less chance of viruses and trojans being introduced.
3. Legality: Tracking that all software installed has relevant licences.
Can I ask, does your company have an IT policy? We do and one part is that
"no-one except IT support may install any software on any machine ...".
If you need it installed ask the IT team, if they won't then escalate it to
your and their manager. They may have a good reason they don't want it
installed.
But I wouldn't recommend "hacking" the machine to do it, you may well be
fired and or prosecuted.
