Cannot Logon Locally, Can I create domain?

I have this problem with an old proliant server I bought. I want to
access the NT4 server but it wants to log me into a domain. Obviously
I am not connected to a domain and simply want to logon locally. I
have the password.

Can I set up a domain enviroment (say with Linux) that uses the domain
name needed by the nt4 box and fool it into letting me logon. Then I
should be able to allow local logon...

Sounds like fun and the type of lesson I need as I pursue a career in
networking. Any suggestions? Am I barking up the wrong tree?
