Hi,
Been given the advise below because recently the server I use is
getting a lot of login attempts, apparently over 100,000 logged!!
The advice-
>>
You can find at news comp.os.linux.security, comp.os.linux.announce
You should constantly check the server's logs: /var/log/messages,
/var/log/secure to find hack's attempts to your server. If you see
illegaluser attempts, you can disable any connections from "bad" IP
via iptables running command:
# iptables -I INPUT -s bad_IP -j DROP
More detail information about iptables you will find following the
next link:
http://iptables-tutorial.frozentux.net
Also you can do simple checking of your server on known rootkits:
please load last version of chkrootkit and rkhunter utilities, unpack
it and run.
>>
I'm not comfortable (to say the least) with Unix type commands, I like
my GUI's, so have neglected upgrading anything on the server, last
time I tried to use a telnet like program I couldn't get it working so
the only root access I have is via FTP with Filezilla which isn't much
use (I guess I can upload, but not run the programs).
It's time I got to grip with this, so looking for an idiots guide to
what programs to use to get the server secure and updated etc... since
what I've read assumes you know how to access everything already.
Like the instructions for http://www.openssh.com/ first thing you have
to do is-
>>
To install OpenSSL, you will need:
* make
* Perl 5
* an ANSI C compiler
* a development environment in form of development libraries and C
header files
* a supported Unix operating system
>>
That's me lost, do I need the above installed on the server or my PC!!
I'm running Windows XP on the PC I use to access the server.
Thanks for any help.
