firstly, wheather FreeBSD is better than linux? i am not qualified to
answer that question for you. bu ti will put my post.

i started with linux. i switched to BSD. my main reason was that *BSD
were more consistent. i hated having to keep track of which distro does
what how and puts what where?

mind you - i only setup servers and machines that offer services to other
machines. i don't use FreeBSD for my own personal desktop so i don't have
to deal with things like fancy X serv., cd buring, mp3 playing, movies
e.t.c..

(i still use winxp for my personal desktop - *taki runs and hides from
the crazed linux zealots chasing him down the road* - also because i have
to share my personal computer with my wife and kids - i'll be damned if i
will teach them Unix! -- everything has it's reasons)

what i really do like about FreeBSD - my personal fav. is the ports
collection. i find it very productive, user friendly and straighforward
to use. http://www.freebsd.org/ports/

you will also want to explore using OpenBSD for any perimiter network
security - firewalls, VPN sevrer, e.t.c.. they are much more stringent
security code review and overall easier to sleep at night knowing that
you implemented perimiter device that runs on OpenBSD.

If it's there, and you can't see it, it's transparent.
If it's not there, and you can't see it, you erased it.
