If you want to use this as a learning experience then download
the free version of ZoneAlarm from www.zonelabs.com
It will prevent every program from accessing the internet until
you specifically allow it to.
If ZoneAlarm is already installed on the machine then go to the
Program Control tab and look at the (probably lengthy) list of
executables that have attempted internet access. You can disallow
internet access to specific executables and then see what, if
anything, stops working for you.
