Tested RedHat, Knoppix and Slackware, but eventually went with Debian.
"apt-get" is very easy to use to install software. Software list is
huge!!!
"alien" allows conversion from RPM to DEB (Debian package).
"dpkg -i <deb file>" allows direct installation of Debian package.
Just remember to run "tasksel" on installation. You don't have to
select anything here, but this seems to fix any little issues that can
appear if you don't run it.
Debian is not cutting edge stuff, but is well tested and stable.
Everything we have wanted to do, Debian does (quick, easy and
effective).
