Newer versions of linux come with netfilter/iptables, a very powerful
filtering program (commonly called a firewall). Unfortunately, it's pretty
steep climbing for newbs. Here's lotsa links:

There are many gui front ends that make it a little easier. Do a google
search for 'iptables gui' and 'iptables frontend'.
Red Hat comes with a basic netfilter implementation you can set to 3 basic
settings (low, med, high security) during install.
