Installing a new version (RPM) of chkrootkit .v43 on
my Mandrake 9.2 system, I got the following error messages:
Checking `wted'... unable to open wtmp-file wtmpx
Checking `scalper'... not infected
Checking `slapper'... not infected
Checking `z2'... unable to open wtmp-file wtmpx
My old version of chkrootkit - version .41 - was a specifically
a Mandrake RPM. The latest RPM version I used was not.
Doing some research on the net, I discovered that wtmpx
is an extension of the wtmp file - which logs user login
activity.
AFAIK, Mandrake doesn't use a wtmpx file, only a wtmp file...
and in fact, I found the latter, but not the former in my
/var/log directory.
I made a soft link ln -s ./wtmp ./wtmpx in my /var/log
directory.
Does this seem sensible? I am no longer getting any
errors. Can anyone confirm that the likely problem was
only that I used an RPM that wasn't specifically designed
for Mandrake, and therefore looked for a wtmpx file which
wasn't there?
The RPM I donwloaded was here:

Many thanks in advance.
