You might want to try Mondo Rescue - http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/

Mondo is great. it comes with its own interface for backing up and
restoring so no need to mess around with tarring stuff up first. Also the
backup CDs are bootable so you can use Mondo to create full system
recovery backups.

I use it because I too can only backup to CD because a decent tape drive
would cost me far too much.

I use mondo to backup my stuff onto CDRW - one full backup a
week (takes 2 cds) and an incremental backup the other 6 days. Then once
a month I take a full backup to CDR for storage. Then about once every 3
months a do a full system (not just data but the whole installation)
backup.
