I would think that this would be the preferred method for home use. CD
blanks are inexpensive. You can use CDRs for archiving and if you want
short term backups, you can use CDRWs.

Disk drives are also competitive with tapes for doing backups. You can use
raid 1 to protect against crashes. Or just copy stuff to them at convenient
times if you want to protect against accidental deletions and the like.
