This seems to be a common problem. I'm also looking for something
easy to use in the sense that you don't have to recompile the
kernal etc, etc. The best solutions would be something where you
mount and unmount the encrypted filesystem so that you don't have
to continually enter your password for each transaction.
This article http://koeln.ccc.de/archiv/drt/crypto/linux-disk.html
is good.
I am still waiting to hear people's experiences with mountable
encrypted filesystems, but it does not appear that many people
are using this yet.
The other crucial point is that whatever type of encrypted
filesystem is chosen, you need for it to have longterm backing
such as PGP/GPG so that you know it will maintain future
compatibility as other technologies change.

I am pretty new to that kind of stuff on linux boxes and searched a
while for some infos. I'd like to have an encrypted filesystem or at
least a directory which gets en/decrypted transparently.
The bottomline seems to be that the solution that I'd like (lazy and
thrifty as I am) is not available.
