dont know exactly what TYPE of login attempts you are looking for
(Local Login, ftp, ssh etc)

but /var/log/auth.log does it for debian linux systems

/var/log/secure shows many different login attempts (pretty much -eq
to auth.log in many instances) on redhat systems (ftp, ssh, sudo
changes etc)
