A mental exercise for you.
Consider this scenario:
/tmp/x/f is a file
but /tmp/x has the "x" bit cleared for everyone (e.g. after a
"chmod a-x /tmp/x")
Now, what do you expect to happen when a non-root user tries to "ls -l
/tmp/x/f" (which boils down to the stat(2) syscall)?
A "Permission denied" error, or a "No such file or directory" error?
Which is more reasonable? More secure? Why?
