When you mean console, I assume you are talking about Non-Gui stuff, I.e
a shell.
There are lots of reasons why people use shell (like bash, tcsh etc.)
One main reason is to execute shell scripts. Also in order to compile
software that is distributed in source form, most of them require you to
go into bash, execute tar, execute make etc.
