"'free' software and operating system"? I assume a typo otherwise I really
don't understand this statement.
well I am not that sure, the way I see it those large companies have helped
brought linux in on larger companies because of the support for their
current use of high end applications and the need for it.
many companies have released software under GPL at this companies too and
are even kind enough to supply some of them free of charge.

I never have problem with paying a fee for a program myself (heck I pay for
my linux OS among other things) and there is really no need not to take the
fee since GPL doesn't say you should release your software free of charge
but it says the buyer should have a certain liberty over what he has bought
as the source code, the right to modify the program and so on.
but yes they would only pay a one time fee not for every system they use it
on and I assume that wouldn't be satisfying to you.
but then again sourceforge.net is full of good programs which mostly are
under the GPL (otherwise as someone else mentioned I really don't have a
problem with the BSD license either since they also offer more liberty than
traditional copyright licenses do)

no I can't say I have or are a part of any such thing, would this be a
problem?
