Somebody has logged in as root on the X-server. As he already has
root permitions on the box it might already be too late to do
anything other than reinstall the system. But since you know he
is sitting right there in front of your computer it might be
easier to just kick him off the chair and kick him until he runs
away from your computer.

You cannot, the attempted passwords are not logged. Only user
names are logged. Why would you want to know?
