With the uplink switch in 'normal', the port is a regular hub port, not
an uplink port. If this configuration is working, it tells me that the
Ethernet port on the cable modem is acting like a NIC, and not a hub.
You can connect two NICs back to back if and only if you use a
'crossover' cable.
