Today I have tried to make sure that all Internet connection ports that I
consider to be unneeded are closed. I have configured certain files to
prevent ports from opening up and I have manually closed others.

Basically after running netstat -pan --inet there are no ports open at all
unless I open my newsreader or email or web browser etc.

I killed processes running named and portmap, etc and everything still
works fine.

My question is - is this at all sensible? I mean if all my regular
activities are performable and no Active Internet connections appear unless
I open up a program, is this ok or will it probably cause me problems at
some stage?

I would like to know what you all think, so many thanks for any responses.
