That's bad news as my system is at a remote location.
After installing and running the 'chkrootkit' suggested
in a previous posting I found someone had set up a a tcp/ip
service on an unused port that grants root access. Very scary
(but very cool from a technical point of view if it wasn't
on MY server!)

Until I can re-install with a more secure distro what steps
(if any) can I take to help make sure no more damage is done?
