Check http://www.linuxguruz.org/ for some really nice links to tutorials,
sample scripts and many other nice pieces of information on setting up
iptables.

The advantage, from my standpoint, of iptables, is that I can use SNAT to
share my internet connection in a very configurable fashion and still be
virtually invisible to the outside world. Zone Alarm is a fine tool for
windows. However, you'll find it has some serious lacks of features as
well - for example, the inability to do SNAT (of course, you need a separate
proxy program to do internet sharing with Zone Alarm). Thing is, there are
no free proxy servers that allow you to do much more than http, ftp, and a
couple other protocols. Iptables allows you to share whatever you want.
More work, but free, open source, and can do a hell of a lot more.
