I've never seen a good answer to that one. Seems like it would make
sense to ask specifically whether you want a service during the
install, or not install it by default. Most people who need services
aren't going to have a problem installing them, at least that's my
theory. No matter what options I choose, I still have to disable
services I don't need. It use to be worse, I remember my first install,
I remember how appalled I was to discover that I was running a slew of
services I didn't need including finger, telnet, ftp, portmap, identd,
just to name a few, or when I learned that the printer and mail daemons
listened and accepted connections on the network interface by default.
No firewall or any security measures in place. Once I saw a post
that detailed how disgustingly easy it was to scan for (and compromise)
default redhat installations in irc chat rooms, complete with example
session log. I use redhat and think it's a great distribution, but I've
always thought it kind of irresponsible of them to leave so many people
open like that.
