A clarification, before someone gets on my ass about incompleteness:
It's one layer, of what should be many layers; in this case, it should be the final layer.
Personally, I'd be looking into some kind of gateway (server-based) solution; that's better as a main line of defense.
And, Sebastian's right about one thing - an antivirus won't do anything about a virus that's "fresh off the keys." So, if an intentional attack is what one speaks to prevent, an AV is useless.
From my view, AVs are for thwarting Internet flotsam-and-jetsam - and with some of the cool technologies out there now, I'd feel naked if I was using it on its own. =:oD
