Re: Symantec vs. McAfee

Although
I use Norton Personal Firewall 2005, I wouldn't dare use any other
Norton or Symantec version...I've tried them all and found them buggy.

I used NPF 2003 for quite some time until SP4 for Win2k came out. For
some reason from that time onward, NPF got very flakey, and subsequent
installs even failed to work at all. I have never tried 2005, but if it
works well that's great. Other version always seemed quirky to me.

CHX-I (in spite of no application control)

Yep, CHX is the Rolls Royce of packet filters..

Kerio 2.1.5 (in spite of fragmented packets vulnerability)

Also one of my favorites, especially the interface.

Zonealarm Plus 4.5.594 (less buggy than recent versions)

I liked ZA Plus 4.0 myself, nice piece of work and free of the modern
bloat to a large extent.

If you are trying out software like this, it is best to use a drive
imaging program (ie. Ghost, Drive Image, etc), make an image and test
stuff out one at a time, restoring the clean image after testing each
one. That way you don't have to be as concerned with one program
conflicting with another, or having a messy uninstall.

This is excellent advice and something I did for over a year here while
I was trying out virtually every software firewall, AV and related
products. A HD image or two can really save tons of time. I used to do
a reformat and fresh install of Win2k and then image it immediately.
Then I'd also install all but the firewall and AV, then image again.
Seems a little crazy at first till you realize that with the image you
can be back to a clean system in 10 minutes, compared to 2-4 hours with
a reformat and reinstall of everything.
