I'm with ya.
I do weekly full system backups to a hard drive, incremental daily
backups to the same hard drive and, once a week, copy my full system
backup to a portable drive, which, in turn, is stored in a fireproof
safe.

What do you mean by "in a fireproof safe"?
A fireproof save drive?
A fireproof safe is the place where you will find all your
unreadable magnetic media after a fire :-)
Unless the safe is explicitly designed and tested as 'media safe'
it is pretty useless. Normal safes are designed and tested against 1 hour at 150
degrees centigrade. That means, that paper will likely survive
the fire without major burning damage.
I have an older one of these (built before anyone had heard of "magnetic media". The instructions for what to do in case of fire are:
1. Extract safe from fire
2. hose down the safe until the exterior stops sizzling
3. Operate combination, but don't open yet,
4. Open while simultaneously bathing area with CO^2 extinguisher.
(the contents will be hot, this last step is to be sure that the paper inside does not flash to flame when exposed to oxygen.)
I kid you not, that's what it says. Hopefully modern technology is a tad better. ;-)
