Todd:
Thanks very much. I will wait for the CD's to arrive. Hopefully they will have, as you describe, one to run from CD & one to install.

Thank you, Todd & Moe.
I went to the Ubuntu website and ordered a CD.
From the description on the page and from what Moe is saying it
sounds like (1) the CD needs to be installed on the computer, as
opposed to the description of Knoppix, which runs completely off of
the CD and
No and yes.
When you get your Ubuntu package it will have 2 CD's in it. At least mine from the prior release of Ubuntu (the Hoary Hedgehog) did. One is an install CD if you decide to install Ubuntu. The other is a live CD a la Knoppix.
Moe is correct that it is challenging to save data when booted onto a
live CD. If you have one of those cool little usb memory keys, or an
external hard drive formatted something other than ntfs, it's all
pretty easy. If you have a local disk drive that's fat32 you could
mount that for storage as well, as another option. Mounting is a
little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy.
(2) I will need to make a separate partition on the harddrive for the installation.
If you chose to install after you test drive the live CD, that's
correct. Ubuntu's live CD has a program called qtparted on it that
allows you to resize your partitions. It has been very reliable for
me in the past, but I never resize partitions without a backup of the
main installation to fall back on.
(3) If this is correct than from what I have read on these newsgroups I will need to use a program that can make a partition without erasing everything on the harddrive (formatting). I have heard the name Partition Magic talked about for this purpose.
qtparted on the Ubuntu CD is a freeware clone of Partition magic.
Am I correct in the assumptions I have just given?
I am familiar with "images" as I have Acronis True Image on my computer for backup. However, it sounds like for me, ordering the CD's will be the easier route.
And they look cool. :-)
