The 'Powers That Be'(tm) here would go ballistic. (But bear in mind that
these are the same kind of boss who wants to run windoze so that when the
bovine droppings hit the air handler, they can blame the software company
and sue them - in spite of our rebuttal to read the license they have on
their windoze box at home.) The only use I can see for this card is that
it's one of a number that can have their hardware address changed. I've
been doing that for years.

That's true, but after you've programmed it, what driver are you going
to use to talk to it from the operating system. The last time I looked at
Donald Becker's site, the 'netdriver' tarball had 20 different drivers for
PCI network cards, and if you felt around, there were a bunch more for those
ancient ISA, EISA, and VESA cards. The Linux 'Ethernet-HOWTO' lists over 80
different drivers. I don't have a kernel source handy, so I don't know how
many drivers come with the kernel right now. So, which one will talk to
this card?

Yeah, I also noticed that. I don't know what we're paying for NICs, but
we're also buying about 700 a year, so I know we're getting some kind of
volume pricing. Certainly, you can buy Intel E1000s for under US$100 in
onezies last I checked.

It is if there is a working driver for the O/S. Otherwise, it's just
expensive useless hardware.
