You should invest in a DSL/Cable router, it's worth it's weight in GOLD.

I would suggest that you at least learn how to use IE6 in HIGH SECURITY
mode, and while it's a pain, it's the only way to securely browse the web
using IE. Try using FireFox, it's almost perfect and it's painless and
less prone to exploits currently.

AV products like NAV 2005 will scan the files in the system restore area,
but it's a good idea if you're compromised to disable system restore, then
scan in safe mode, then reboot, then once you're clean to enable system
restore.

This is one area where many people fail, the only time I've seen backups
being done is when an IT person setup the system or when the user has
already lived through a complete loss and didn't want to again.

Even burning files to DVD+RW or CD-RW is a good choice.

The router would by my first change as I don't trust Windows (any version)
connected directly to the Internet.
