I'm personally no fan of Microsoft, but some aspects of this article are
silly. Many Microsoft products now perform their own validation when you
install them, apparently including Windows XP. MS have no need to do this
with other programs that they load onto your computer.

There is one clear motive with their distribution of free anti-spyware
products. By giving Windows users free anti-spyware products now and
distributing it with future versions of Windows, they hope to dominate the
market within a few years. If their anti-spyware works effectively and
costs nothing then many people will stop paying for their other
anti-spyware programs and will switch to it.

In a few years Microsoft will simply make the decision to start charging
for updates to the spyware database. Since users will then have a choice
between paying MS for updates and buying another product then paying
somebody else for updates, most people will pay MS. This is a very fast
and effective way to take over a large portion of the market.

It would then also put them in a good posiiton to expand into other
security-related markets by manufacturing products that integrate well
with the existing anti-spyware ones.
